Centipedes are not insects, but they actually belong to the class of myriapods. Centipedes have one pair of legs per body segment. Nowadays, centipedes are known to be found on each corner of the world. They can be found both indoors and outdoors. This is quite a fascinating species with an evolution on more than 400 million years.

Appearance

Centipedes have a pair of long and really sensitive antennae. Their mouths are small, but centipedes have a venom gland. The species uses venom to catch their prey. Most centipedes are carnivores and they search for food at night. Their sizes can range between a few millimeters up to 30 cm.

Habit

Centipedes prefer dark, moist areas in which they hide during the winter. The species can set homes in soil during the summer. Most centipedes live up to 6 years. Their development until becoming adults take between 2 and 3 years.

Diet

Centipedes detect the presence of prey with the use of their antennae. When caught, the prey is immobilized by venom. Centipedes commonly eat insects, spiders, worms, but also other arthropods. They can also feed with plants.

When entering homes, centipedes will tend to hide around bathrooms or closets. However, the species is rarely seen by humans due to the high speed with which they can move and the fact that they are nocturnal animals, hiding during the day. The venom of centipedes is not fatal to human, but some people may be allergic to it. The bite can be really painful, this is why it would be better to avoid the encounter with this animal. In case swelling, redness, pain, vomiting, nausea or burning sensations are experienced, you may be allergic to the venom. Seek medical care as soon as possible.
